Great News

One of our superstars, Libby Harbaugh, has been selected to participate in a Marianist program, where she will be going to Los Angeles and volunteering with Father Greg Boyle and Homeboy Industries.

Libby was selected for this opportunity at the University of Dayton. I am sending a t-shirt for Father Boyle with Libby to Los Angeles, and we cannot wait to hear stories and Pictures (YES!!!) of Libby's visit to see God's Grace, compassion, and a first hand look at the kinship that Homeboy Industries is spreading in Los Angeles.

CANT WAIT!

Hi Everyone!
I just wanted to take the time out and let everyone know how awesome this trip is! I went last year as a junior and I had the time of my life. Although I went down with so many people I already knew, I became closer with them and also met and became close with people I have never met in my entire life. This trip changed my life completely, and because of it I am a much better person today. No one will ever be able to describe how awesome and life changing this trip is, so you HAVE to come and be a part of it to see!
If you have any questions or want to hear about some of the awesome experiences I have had I would be happy to talk to anyone!! Hope to see everyone at the meeting this Thursday @ 7:00 @ The Edge and in Biloxi Mississippi this June!

I am counting

I am counting down the days until we go back to Biloxi! (236 in case anyone was wondering) I went for the first time in June and it was honestly the best week of my life. I never thought something so simple as service could change my life forever. I met new friends who I instantly connected with and now I can’t imagine not knowing them. When I signed up to go to Biloxi as a junior I signed up to get my service requirements, I had no idea it would be such a life changing experience. Now as a senior I would encourage any junior to go no matter what the circumstances are. When I was a junior and was listening to the seniors talk about it I didn’t really think it could be THAT great. It was even greater than anyone ever described it to me!

There will be a meeting on October 20, 2011 at 7:00 pm at the Edge for anyone interested in going with us to Biloxi in June! I hope that I see you all there!

Peace,
Elise

In Charity and Truth

In the epistle In Charity and Truth, Pope Benedict XVI uses the word charity and love interchangeably. Today, at the Micah Center, six Nerinx girls have learned that there isn't two words in the English language quite as similar as those. What we have long considered "charity" work blossomed today into love for people, complete strangers, who seem so different but couldn't be more similar. It never ceases to amaze me how every time I go out to do "charity" that the people I'm helping help me more than I could ever help them.

Today, Amy Welin went with ne and said that she learned a profound message: It's not that the homeless are all alone, but they always need a helping hand; that one single action could change their life. Even if they aren't off the streets, even if that one single action didn't get them a job or a hot meal, just a smile could turn their day around.

Of all the things that they are missing in their lives, it isn't a home, a meal, or even shower that they ask for: what some people really want is to be noticed. I've learned today that, in the everyday lives of these people, sometimes the only interaction that they get with other people is the cops chasing them off the beach— which, for all intents and purpose, serves as their home— or being completely and totally ignored. What they ask is that someone simply notices that they exist.

I think the best lesson I learned today is this: Notice.
